Fonterra Brands Takanini hosts senior school students for a site visit

Students and teacher from Saint Kentigern College

In August, Fonterra Brands Takanini hosted site visits by senior students and teachers from Rosehill College, Alfriston College and Saint Kentigern College, to give them an insight into science, technology and engineering careers in the food processing industry. NZIFST, Massey University and Futureintech helped the company with organisation and resources.

The visitors met team members with science, technology and engineering backgrounds, including a Nutritionist, Sensory Scientist, Mechatronics Engineer, Chemical Engineer and Food Technologists, two of whom are Futureintech Ambassadors. Each outlined their journey through secondary school and university, to their current career choice. The Operations Manager and NPD Innovation Manager give brief presentations about the career choices (lots!) within Fonterra manufacturing sites.

The visitors toured the viewing galleries of both the Beverages and Foods Plants, and were blown away by how large and automated everything was. They sampled a range of products that are produced on site - milk, flavoured milks, UHT, yoghurts and custard, and then finished with a sample of Tip Top Ice-cream from the other Fonterra Brands plant in Auckland.

The visitors said that they loved getting to see a real processing facility; a lot of businesses no longer host site visits for school students. Their Fonterra hosts were delighted to hear that several students are seriously considering a career in the food processing industry. They are keen to organise more school visits next year.
